  • What does it mean? A question about teen psychology. Are middle school grades really that important?

Posted by admin on September 26th, 2009 and filed under middle school grades | 6 Comments »

Is there a particular reason a teenage, who was all aces in school grades until they started going through their changing years, and claims they have no date? Has suddenly started failing classes. Could there be any other exexplanation besides attraction. And who knows a teen in the class better than a teacher?

There can be plenty of reasons for a teen to suddenly start doing less well at school. Their priorities can change seemingly overnight as they learn and discover new things and they really start to question the world around them for the first time.

Teens can lose focus because of popularity, lack of popularity, insecurity about their looks, worrying at the state of the world or almost anything else. The only way to be sure is to talk to them (NOT lecture!) and listen to what they have to say.

As to who knows a teen better than their teacher – well, virtually anyone. Teachers know what happens in school, but pupils rarely if ever give them any real clue as to why.

The only person who can give you real reasons is the teen themselves – assuming even THEY know why. Sometimes teens aren’t sure themselves.

Get your teen(s) to read this anyway. It might help:

How to start Public Speaking Club for High School and Middle School students?

Posted by admin on September 26th, 2009 and filed under middle school students | 2 Comments »

I would like to teach a public speaking class to some high school and middle school students. I am going to call it a Public Speaking Club, but it will be more like workshops, once a week for about an hour.

Does anyone know of any websites I can go to in order to find a curriculum, or possibly just give me some help on creating different exercises to help the students become better public speakers?

I want it to be fun!

    Thanks :)

Where are you located? Every state and many districts are involved in competitive speech tournaments. There, the public speaking events would be extemporaneous and impromptu, and maybe a few others. Try speaking to teachers to see if speech exists. If not, the National Forensic League has many resources to help you get started.

I know this isn’t the same thing, but since the league already exists, it’s educational and the students will compete for awards. That extra incentive really will help them work hard. This site has help for working on "extemporaneous" which is a limited preparation activity which asks people to answer a question related to current events in a 7 minute speech. There are also curriculum guides. Check the second site to contact someone in your area for getting started.

Common concerns for middle school teachers?

Posted by admin on September 26th, 2009 and filed under middle school teachers | 1 Comment »

Other than behavioral issues, what difficulties do middle school teachers face during their day? I’m writing a mock advice column for a college course and could use a little inspiration on what problems/topics might be a concern for teachers.
Daryl, this is a huge help!

I am an 8th grade teacher. Keeping the students motivated is always a concern as well as making the work relevant to their life is a challenge.

Why did the student fail the test?

    1. Did he not get it?
    2. Did he not study?
    3. Does he have a low reading comprehension level?
    4. Is he motivated?
    5. Did I teach the material in an appropriate manner to allign with the assessment?

    Hope this helps.

What is the math class standard for a public middle school?

Posted by admin on September 26th, 2009 and filed under middle school math | 3 Comments »

I go to a private school and i want to go to a public school again. I am in middle school. School Math standards for private schools in california is 6th – regular math 7th- Math07 or pre algebra 8th- pre algebra or algebra. my teacher says that public schools in california use this too. I don’t believe this because my cousin go’s to a public middle school and is in 6th grade and her math class is pre algebra. so please answer

It depends on your level of mathematics, there is a special placement exam you must take, and if you score high enough, you will be placed into that high of a class, usually it goes 6th Math, 7th Math, and 8th would go pre algebra, unless your placement allows you to take pre algebra earlier, in which case you skip 6 and 7 and are able to take pre algebra.

I would like to become a middle school science teacher but…?

Posted by admin on September 26th, 2009 and filed under middle school science | 1 Comment »

I am not great at math. I absolutley love learning about the earth and space and I have a passion to teach. Will I be able to become a middle school science teacher even though I am not in the advanced math program in high school? (I am going to be a junior next year.) And what will I have to do in college in order to ecome a science teacher?

Nothing you do in high school matters beyond your GPA.
As to what you should do in college:

There are two ways to become a science teacher
The NUMBER ONE BEST WAY if you want to teach middle school, is to get a degree in education. If you wanted to teach high school, I would recommend getting a degree in science, like biology or geology. But since you’re dealing with younger kids, and you will need to have a broad exposure to science, this is what you should do:

pick a school with a good education program. That will be your major. Your emphasis or minor should be General Sciences, OR your favorite science. Maybe astronomy or biology or whatever it is you like and your college offers. It doesn’t matter what you pick, because you are going to be taking lots of science electives, so you will have the opportunity to take all sorts of things. You will also need some chemistry.
    —————
During college you will have classes that will let you go to middle school classrooms to observe and eventually to do a few lessons of your own. Near the end of college, when you’ve taken all the classes you need, you will then have student teaching. It is usually about 6 weeks of practice teaching in someone else’s classroom.
    —————-
You will have to take math classes, but not that many. Probably just algebra, physical science (which is mostly math) and a math class specifically for teachers. So don’t worry about it.

Realize that you will be going to school to learn how to teach middle school AND high school students. So if you change your mind, you will always be able to teach high school kids too, but never elementary students. You won’t be qualified.

Why should middle schools have a shorter lunch?

Posted by admin on September 26th, 2009 and filed under middle schools | 1 Comment »

In middle schools we have a half hour of lunch what are some reasons we should have a shorter lunch?

It doesn’t take 30 minutes to eat. So once kids are done eating they will have free time. Research shows fights greatly increase in middle and high schools when kids have free unstructured time.

I am considering an online school for my middle school daughter?

Posted by admin on September 24th, 2009 and filed under online middle school | 2 Comments »

I have heard nothing but great things about it. I am wondering if there is some negative aspect that I am not considering? Socialization won’t be a problem since my daughter is actively involved in the youth ministry at her church. She can also take sports and other classes at the YMCA if she wants. Am I missing any significant considerations?

is your daughter in cooperation with this choice?
because as long as shes doing well in school anyways the transfer out would be sort of sad and unnecessary . being in a school system i believe helps you for your future gets you used to working in a structured social atmosphere

i did a an online class and it was sort of complicated without a teacher and surrounding students you seem to have a loss of motivation and sense of true schooling

    what grade by the way

Do colleges care about middle school grades?

Posted by admin on September 24th, 2009 and filed under middle school grades | 7 Comments »

Do colleges really look at your middle school grades?

Most colleges do not, unless you took a class in middle school for high school credit.

In other words: colleges only look at High School GPA’s
