  • How can a elementary teacher also teach middle school math?

Posted by admin on December 18th, 2009 and filed under middle school | 1 Comment »

I’m in school to be an elementary school teacher, however I would also like to be a middle maybe high school math teacher. My degree will be liberal studies/education, but what steps could I take to teach middle/high school math?

    Thanks much!

I got a degree in education, with emphasis in elementary education. My major was fine arts and my minor was math/social studies.
My teaching certificate stated that I was qualified to teach K-8 9 (all subjects), and 9th grade Fine Arts.
Check with your state, but I think you can get a minor in math and that will transfer to your credentials.

Why are the general public so down on middle school students hooking up with their teacher?

It happens a lot more than people realize. Normally it is kept pretty quiet, there is teachers lounge gossip of course.

It’s not like any of the students are inexperienced. A lot of the real party-girls have been sleeping around since elementary school, and with guys a lot older. What harm is there in it really if one of the guys happens to be their phys ed teacher?

They are betraying a position of trust with people who are far too immature to make rational decisions about such things. That is why they inevitable get prison sentences when caught – and rightly so!!!!!

    They are pedophiles!!!!!

Are middle school teachers hindering students by telling them to use wikipedia for research projects?

Posted by admin on December 18th, 2009 and filed under middle school teachers | 8 Comments »

Because wikipedia is not a reliable source and most can’t ever use it in college and even most of high school.

I think Wikipedia gets a bad rap for no particular reason. I use it extensively to gain general knowledge about topics of interest. It is an extensive database of information that contains little incorrect information. One could go through the exercise of cross-referencing and verifying every bit of information they read on Wikipedia; in my opinion, this would be a fruitless exercise.

History is rife with misinformation (e.g. How Columbus was depicted in school texts fifty years ago); it seems unfair to label Wikipedia as an unreliable source when there are plenty of unreliable sources available. You can just as easily cross-reference incorrect information as you can correct information.

I would expect that encouraging students to use Wikipedia would probably have the following effects: (i) it would encourage students to seek out information on topics that interest them; (ii) it would allow students to gain general knowledge about a variety of topics; (iii) it would give students a source that they can use to research topics for school projects (note: that by middle school, students should use at least three different sources of information); (iv) it might even give them some additional reading practice!

High school and college students would probably have difficulty passing in a paper citing "The Mickey Mouse Encyclopedia of Everything" as a source of information, but a grade one student would be lauded for their use of this (ficticious) source. Middle school students likewise have not necessarily developed the sophistication to use the same sources that high school and college students would. Wikipedia, in my opinion, is an appropriate source of information for middle school students.

One last point to ponder . . . Is the information really important in a research project? When I teach reading, I am teaching reading strategies, not whether Emily will make the right decision by the end of the story. When I assign a research project, it isn’t so students can learn more about marsupials (this is a corollary effect though), it is to teach them research strategies, so when they do enter high school or college, they will be able to tackle the so-called more reliable sources of information with ease.

Distance Learning Middle School Math Course?

Hey… I was wondering if anybody knew of any distance learning courses that could count for an upper division "how to teach middle school math" sequence? My school had buget cuts this year so I cannot recieve my Middle School Math certificate unless I find some other way to fulfill my requirements for the series of classes required. Thanks for your help!!!

I took two classes from Dr. Rachelson. see the link. recommended but check with your district to see if they will allow the units. My district had no problem as they are accredited with SACS.

Are there any high schools or middle schools in Long Beach Island, New Jersey?

Posted by admin on December 18th, 2009 and filed under middle schools | 1 Comment »

I’ve looked it up, but every school I find is only up to 6th grade.

If not, where do these kids go to middle school and/or high school?

New Jersey has a bizarre school district system when compared to other states. This is a case where a child will atttend schools in two different districts even though he has never moved.

After 6th grade, the towns on Long Beach Island send their kids to Southern Regional Middle School and Southern Regional High School. Both are across the bay in Manahawkin.

is there a way i can get credits in online school for middle school?

Posted by admin on December 15th, 2009 and filed under online middle school | 3 Comments »

i want to give online school a chance, because ive heard a lot of good things about it. im not sure im ready to give up the actual experience of school though. you know, going to friends houses after school, eating lunch together, dating. etc .

me and my mom thought i could do online school during the summer, and get credits for my classes. i know you can do that in high school, but what about middle school?

oh, if it makes a difference, i live in arizona.

I live in Utah and there is a program for homeschooled students here called EHS and it can be used to get ahead for any grade and can be used from people in other states. You can complete all of the quarters credits that you want and then take a final test on them with a certified proctor. Unless you live in the very northern part of Arizona and would not mind meeting a proctor in utah to take a test your mother could become a certified proctor online and you could take the final tests at home. It has all classes the classes almost that a normal highschool would have and a class that I would suggest you took would be a secondary language class because they are easy to take online and you need probably two years of it to get into most colleges. EHS will send proof of your quarter credits to your junior high or high school.

When you apply for a college, do the people considering it look at your middle school grades?

I just got an A- in science and I’m in 7th grade. Will people that consider me for their college ever look at our middle school grades?

I’ve never heard of anyone going back further than high school grades. I cannot state that it *never* happens, as I don’t know the admission policies of all of the colleges/universities in the world.

It wouldn’t make any sense to do so, since the grades wouldn’t reflect recent work (compared with the application date). Nor would those grades suggest the applicant’s ability to do college-level work. The later is really what the admission committee ultimately wants to decide.

What community service can a middle school aged kid do?

Posted by admin on December 15th, 2009 and filed under middle school | 5 Comments »

What community service can a middle school aged kid do (say 11-13) that does NOT involve long hours on the feet, extra walking, running, or being outside for extended hours? She needs community service hours, but would like to avoid these things if possible.

there are 2 activities that you can engage in.
first one is library. not hard, does not require skill… boring but
    doable
second one is old people’s house, AKA nursing home. go there help elders
