  • For Middle School RSP Teachers- Do any of you move with your students for all middle school years?

Posted by admin on January 18th, 2010 and filed under middle school teachers | 2 Comments »

Our administration has this crazy idea that the RSP teachers should move with their students for all three years. We have many arguments against this. Of course this was sprung on the RSP teachers and they were asked to outline reasons against this.

I’m not a teacher but may I answer this from the viewpoint of someone who went to school starting in the 50’s?
In the lower grades, maybe kindergarten to 2nd grade, I think stability means a lot to kids who have not been separated from home and parents to this extent before. I know expectations have changed since I was in school, but the lower grades teach(or should begin to teach) the basics-reading, simple math, etc. I think one teacher CAN handle that.
However, as the grades progress, the work becomes more specialized according to subject. I don’t believe that we can expect every teacher to be proficient at every subject. I learned more from teachers who KNEW more about what they were teaching-and if they LOVED that particular subject, it was a bonus for all of us.
May I give one sad example heard from a friend who teaches at a Catholic high school? She was originally from Canada-spoke French like a native, taught the subject for years, and every year took her students on a tour of France. The school ran low on money-the choice was to retain the French class, or begin a Spanish class. We all know Spanish is getting rammed down our kids’ throats, like it or not. My friend couldn’t speak a word of Spanish. She & her sister were supporting an elderly, disabled mother and an old family house-neither woman ever married because their mom needed them so. My friend needed her job so bad that SHE offered to teach the Spanish class, not knowing a word! She took the total immersion type classes and when school started, she was able to stay far enough ahead of her students to be able to teach them. The school dropped the Spanish class the next year and re-instated the French class. I tell you this to show that for many of our teachers, that job is all that stands between them and the unemployment line, & its best for students to have the BEST teachers in their particular fields, instead of forcing teachers to learn a little about EVERY class but being an expert in none but their original specialty. The "jack of all trades" analogy….:)

Need Buliten board ideas for middle school math?

Posted by admin on January 18th, 2010 and filed under middle school math | 3 Comments »

    grades 6, 7, and 8
I am not creative, please help me with creative ideas

Each year I read my students the book titled Math Curse. It’s about a teacher who tells his students that pretty much everything can be viewed in terms of math. Then the narrator starts seeing math everywhere and it drives him crazy.

After reading the book, I put up the words from the book (I can’t remember them verbatim right now). The kids then bring me an item I can easily attach to the board with a math problem written on an index card. These are placed on the board for other student to try and solve. For example: a candy bar wrapper. The question might be "If every person in Mrs. ???’s class ate three candy bars, how much fat would they have consumed?" Or, a highlighter and the question might be, "If highlighters were placed end-to-end all the way to the moon, how many highlighters would be needed?"

The kids love it and the book is really cool.

Can you help me with this theory of evolution middle school science question?

According to the theory of evolution, which of the following processes leads to adaptive changes in the genetic makeup of a species over time?
    A. Genetic differences among
    individuals in a population make
    some individuals more likely to
    survive and reproduce than others.
    B. Physical changes in individuals
    that are caused by environmental
conditions are passed on to their
    offspring through their genes.
    C. Environmental changes produce
mutations in the genes of individuals
    that help their offspring
    survive and reproduce.
    D. Populations of individuals with
    relatively low mutation rates eventually
    replace populations that have
    unstable genetic material.
What’s the best way to understand this theory and Natural selection as well? aren’t there 5 parts to natural selection? Do you have a website link that best explains all this? b/c not only would I like to understand this question, but others like it

    The best answer is A.

Natural selection is very simple. Those organisms with the best genes for the organisms’ survival in its environment are more likely to be passed on to fertile offspring. Changes in the genes of the germ cell line are passed on to the next generation, and if the genetic changes make offspring more fertile in their environment, the frequency of the gene will rise in the population.

Note that changes in the environment may favor new genes to cope with the changes. Also, keep in mind that the genetic changes are random, but the selection process is not.

This is survival of the fittest, where fitness only means producing fertile offspring.

What is creekland middle schools wifi password? 20 points for best answer?

Creekland middle school lawrenceville Georgia, wifi username and password, 20 points for best answer if you tell me how to give points.

Schools don’t generally have a wifi username and password. They usually use a Radius server that authenticates using a domain username and password. So, to get a username/password I would try finding the username and password of a school district employee. Additionally, they may use MAC filtering to prevent random hardware from authenticating. Using another user’s name and password, however would be easily traced back to whatever device you are connecting with. So, by using another person’s credentials you could easily be in violation of the school’s permissible use policy and perhaps the local laws.

online argument that middle school kids need more time?

Posted by admin on January 18th, 2010 and filed under online middle school | 1 Comment »

i need an argument supporting the fact that middle school students need more time switching between classes? i need to do research for my LA persuasive essay.

We do need more time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The dean of the middle school/my english teacher always asks why we are late. It is not our fault but the halls get clogged and people walk to slow or stop and talk… when other people have to get somewhere!!!!!!! We also need to get stuff from our lockers and that just add more time…. we need at least four minutes or three…. teachers should give us more time and try and navigate crowded hallways and other stuff. We also need to talk to teachers, etc. Good luck and hope you get an A+++.

What is an average salary for primary teaching at international schools in the Middle East?

Posted by admin on January 18th, 2010 and filed under east middle school | 1 Comment »

I’ve looked at recruitment websites and they all say ‘a competitive tax-free salary’. I was hoping someone could give me a rough idea of the figure in pounds or dollars for a fully qualified primary teacher.

    Thanks!

It depends on where you come from. If you are from UK., US you can expect starting salary of $3000 per month. If you are from India or Asia and if you are lucky you can expect $500. Again if have a Rs.2000 ($50) job in India, don’t think of Middle East.

What is a good middle school appropriate book that would lead to a debate?

Posted by admin on January 18th, 2010 and filed under middle school | 9 Comments »

I am a middle school teacher looking to read a fiction or "story-like" nonfiction book that will lead into a classroom debate. We got into a discussion on the death penalty last week, so an 8th grade appropriate book involving the death penalty would be a possibility. Really any ideas of an appropriate novel that would we could then hold a debate over would be great.

The Giver by Lois Lowry. Has a lot of dystopian concepts in it. The whole idea of euthanasia would be a great debate.

The Burn Journals by Brent Runyon…true account of his attempted suicide by setting himself of fire. Brent tells the story of his recovery.

Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit could spark an interesting discussion about the pros and cons of immortality.

The Face on the Milk Carton by Caroline B Cooney. Janie wakes up from her normal suburban life when she discovers her picture posted as a missing child on a milk carton.

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card…futuristic dystopian society where children are sent to battle school to defeat an alien threat.

The Death Penalty for Teens by Nancy Day….It’s an overview of the death penalty, but also enphasizes teen criminals. There’s always A Time to Kill by John Grisham…but that might not be entirely appropriate for 8th graders….it’s about the trial of a man accused of killing the men who raped his daughter.

Where can you find free or cheap scripts for middle school students?

Where can you find free or cheap scripts for middle school students?

I am a new middle school teacher who loved performing in plays throughout school. I would like to have my students perform a play, yet with a district wide budget cut, I will have to fund this project myself. I am not against writing my own script, but was only curious if there were any good sources for a small school play. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! :)

Archive.org has a bunch of public domain movies. Use the scripts from those, because it’s legal and free. Or Shakespeare.

Are teachers in middle school meaner than the teachers in elementary school?

are middle school teachers mean than elementary school teachers?

Well, they demand a little more from you, but they aren’t necessarily meaner! You may have to do a little more work than you are used to, but most teachers are very friendly and personable. I’m sure you ran in to a few meanies in elementary school, and you will definitely have to face a few really bad ones during the course of your education. Just remember that you only have these teachers for one year, so try your best to get along with them and do what they ask! You’ll get through it, don’t worry!
