  • I’m a youth minister that’s planning a sleepover for our Middle School girls (grades 6-8). Help!?

Posted by admin on February 28th, 2010 and filed under middle school grades | 27 Comments »

I’m planning our annual Middle School Girl’s sleepover. Unfortunately I haven’t been a middle school girl for about 12 years. So, what sort of activities should be planned? I’ve got dinner, a talk, a movie, and that’s about it. What should we do? What are middle school girls into nowadays? Hanna Montana? I have no clue. HELP!!
Oh my gosh. GREAT ideas. You all ROCK!

Hanna Montana is a little childish for middle school girls (true they probably all watch it, but will not admit it). Lets see….Wehn i went to youth group events. we would watch a movie. dinner. I remember my pastor used to bring up contemporary christian issues alot at gatherings. I suggest playing games such as twister, catch phrase, taboo, scene it…etc stuff like that. also, alot of girls are getting into video games now a days, i would see if you know anyone who has a wii or playstation and try to play guitar hero, ddr…stuff like that. Well, good luck, have fun. Trust me, girls will be girls and have fun with or without planned activities.

some kind of treat that they fix themselves – bake cookies, make s’mores, something like that

Something arts and crafty – maybe everyone paints a small pottery object. Tons of fun.

Throw a game like twister in there too. Monopoly maybe? Games are always fun, and it makes the night a little better.

if the girls know each other pretty well then they will probably just want to talk. (and trust me, they will have plenty to talk about) just make sure to have lots of fun snacks. also some girls might want to do each others make-up and hair. but dont worry about it too much. if it is too planned then it wont be as fun. it sounds like you already have enough things to keep them busy. im sure it will be fine. good luck

That sounds good. You could probably play a fun board game like Pictionary (you could use big dry erase boards), Apples to Apples, or Cranium. Or games like Charades…just go over the general signs with them and then let them come up with the spefics in each category…like Movies, books, songs, vacation spots, etc.

      Have Fun!

get two teams and some toilet rolls: race to wrap one team member up as a mummy – not very eco friendly but funny

if you’ve time to prepare – save up some boxes, toilet/kitchen roll tubes etc – glue, tape and a couple of markers and two teams have to make e.g. robots/rockets and compete. it might sound like something for younger kids but set a time limit of 5-10 mins so it’s all frantic and funny.

Stalkers/ Jedi Force game:Blindfold a person and sit them on a chair with a set of keys underneath..and a rolled up newspaper/wrapping paper tube etc (lightsaber)
Then the rest of the group lines up and tries to walk up quietly, steal the keys and return to the starting line.
The person in the chair points waves the lightsaber at people he hears and they are ‘out’ if he hits them. It works in a large room or outside.
It’s pretty fun. The winner gets to sit in the chair next. the object of the game is silence fom the stalker.

Divide the girls into pairs or small groups. Provide newspaper, recycling stuff sticky tape and scissors, . One child of each pair/group is the mannequin to be dressed by the other(s). You could specify a theme in advance (e.g. wedding dresses) or have winners of different categories eg, most original, practical.

scavenger hunts are funny if you’ve a big enough venue or can venture outside – tailor list to your venue e.g. pine cone, till receipt, dust bunny, curtain hook, peg… points for each item (more points for harder items)

egg drop….. You will need: black bin bag, small box or container, string, sticky tape, balloons, everything else you can think of, and an egg. You need all this for each team. Points from the scavenger hunt can be used to ‘buy’ the above.
Teams (threes work well) have to construct a device into which an egg can be placed and then dropped from a height by an adult. This can be from a window or from a step ladder. The aim is to prevent the egg from breaking. Prizes can be awarded to everyone for various spurious reasons (egg not breaking, most broken egg, best idea, best looking device, noisiest team etc).

Tips– An adult should drop the device, and another adult should open the device at the bottom to see if it’s broken – keep the kids away from the landing point! Put surviving eggs back in the box and hide it!!
Get the kids to shout a countdown, cheer for surviving eggs, and shout ‘Wipeout’ (or something) when they break.
Give the kids the egg as late as possible in the construction, and make sure you’ve got some spares.
      Adults can play too!
      Don’t give them scissors.
Don’t use your best carpet as the landing point.

If they’re staying over get them to make their own pizza toppings f they’re not all too tired by then and eat in front of a classic film like gremlins/the goonies (with alcohol-free beer /cocktails to make them feel a little grown up)

have fun. hope you have enough time for some of these

They would love to give make-overs and show them off on a cat-walk. One way you can really get to know them is ask them questions like truth or dare. Go play putt-putt golf. They love that and it will help with filling up your day.

OK I’m 13 and i would love to go to a sleepover where there were lots of games and good. one game that was fun at my party was i put a whole bunch of random clothes like swim suits sweaters pants and scarves. u need all kinds of clothes. pajamas. everything. the best part is if u put lots of crazy clothes (not cute) u put them all in a huge bag. then u have everyone stand in a circle and pull out a clothing item. they have yo put them on in the order they pull them out. this game is soooo much fun and everyone looks ridiculous in the end!. an other fun game is to put a camera on a self timer and pass it around the circle making funny faces. the camera will set of and catch someones funny face. good luck w/ the sleepover

Dont do hanahmontana, its probably big with the 6th graders but the 8th graders would rather leave. At my churches lock-in (thats what we call the sleep over) hes our itinerary.
      7pm everyone arrives
7:30 group games, we play sardines, basketball, soccer, and volleyball
      8:30 dinner, ussually pizza
9:00 movie, we watched enchated once, and another time we watched the chronicles of narnia
10:30 bible chat, we talk about how the movie relates to the bible and god
11:00 freetime, there are other movies available and board games for us to play along with open gym time, our lockins are at a private school that the church is afiliated with
      12:00 midnight ice-cream social
1:00 goup games, everyone gets together again for more group games, there is this reall fun game adn its kinda like tag but you take prisoners, and if someone from your team has been made a prisoner you have to go to the other teams side and try to rescue them (tag them) but while you are over there you risk being tagged your self its really fun
2:00 more free time, most people just chat, eat or sleep

at about 6:00 breakfast is put out, seeing as most people dont go to sleep it doesnt seem so weird

Middle school girls like to gossip so having the free time is always nice, you can also try and do a gift exchange or go to the local movie theater and watch a movie there

      I just had my 13th b-day and i had a frosen t-shirt contest.
It was loads of fun all you have to do is get as many t-sirts as you need one size that would fit all the girls. Then you soak them in water and dont ring them out then you put the in big zip lock bags and put them in the freezer overnight and then you hand them all out and who ever gets there t-shirt on first wins a prize and you can choose what the prize is.

I think you should let them bring (preferably clean) music to have a dance party. I also like the idea of makeovers. I WOULD NOT DO HANNAH MONTANA. Most middle schoolers are "so over it." Good luck.

try cordinating your activities to a bible verse or lesson plan llike for example

Makeovers(hair, makeup, ect.): relate that to how our body is God’s temple, or As long as we are Christians, God cares about how pretty we are on the inside.

Dance Dance revolution (or dance compitition): Praise him with the dance(casting crowns first CD)

hope I helped, i’ll think up some more Ideas and get back to you, my email is available

I think you should spend some time talking to them about respecting themselves and their bodies. They are at the age where some of there classmates maybe experimenting and they may feel the need to put pressure on a classmate so they wont be the only ones doing whatever it is they are doing. Let them know that if and only when they respect there selves can they find true love. And if they aren’t ready to have sex they should wait. No matter what, they will find more pleasure in it if they do so.
