  • How do you solve this middle school math problem? I NEED TO KNOW NOW!!!!!!!?

Posted by admin on February 15th, 2010 and filed under middle school math | 24 Comments »

    Here is the problem

    4 6/7 multiply by 1 8/9= ?

The / stands for a fraction bar.
the space betwene the 4 and 6 means it is a mixed number so does 1 and 8
please include how to do the problem and the answer

    -thanks

first you change the mixed numbers into fractions
so 4 6/7 would become 34/7 because you multiply the whole number (4) with the denominator (7) and then add the numerator (6) to get the fraction which is 34/7

you do teh same for the second mixed number and you should get 17/9

    now you have… 34/7 x 17/9

you multiply the numerators (top numbers) together to get 578
next you multiply the denominators (bottom numbers) together to get 63

    so your answer is 578/63

      first make everything a fraction.
      SO…

      34/7 x 17/9

      now you multiply straight across.

      34 x 17
      _________
      7 x 9

      = 578/63
      Then reduce:
      =9 11/63

First you have to convert both mixed numbers to irregular fractions. Than multiply the two irregular fractions by multiplying the numerators together and multiplying the denominators together. Than convert back to a mixed number.

WELL IF YOU TRY IT IS NOT HARD AT ALL. YOU ALL HAVE TO DO ID IS CHANGE THE PROPER FRACTIONS INTO MIXED NUMBERS. SO IT IS 26/6 TIMES 18/9. MULTIPLY STRAIGHT ACROSS THEN REDUCE THE FRACTION. WELL I AM A MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER. THIS MIGHT HELP ALOT!!

You need to convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions first.
      4 6/7 = [4(7) + 6] / 7 = (28 + 6) / 7 = 34 / 7
      1 8/9 = [1(9) + 8] / 9 = (9 + 8) / 9 = 17 / 9

      Multiply the improper fractions.
      (34 / 7) * (17 / 9) =
      578 / 63 =
      9 11/63

      ANSWER: 9 11/63

      34/7 multiply by 17/9

multiply the denominator with denominator and numerator with numerator

      34 * 17 = 578
      7 * 9 = 63

      => 578/63

simplify if possible … but this one can’t be simplified any further

-first, you should convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions:
      4 6/7 = ((7*4) + 6) / 7 = 34 / 7
      1 8/9 = ((9*1) + 8) / 9 = 17 / 9

      -then just multiply:
      (34*17)/(7*9) = 578 / 63

IF ALL U WANT IZ DA ANSWER IZ 9 11/63 BUT DIS IZ HOW U DO IT

      1) MULTIPLY BOTH OF THE WHOLE NUMBERS BY THE DENIMONATORS (BOTTOM NUMBER) YOU WILL GET 34/7 AND 17/9

2)MULTIPLY STRAIGHT ACROSS SO THE NUMIRATOR (TOP NUMBER) WILL BE 578 THE DENIMORATOR BOTTOM NUMBER) WILL BE 63

      3)REDUCE AND U WILL GET 9 11/63

Alright, so change all mixed fractions to improper fractions, much easier that way.

      So:

      7 x 4 = 28, 28 + 6 = 34………..resulting in 34/7

      1 x 9 = 9, 9 + 8 = 17………….resulting in 17/9

      So now it becomes :

34/7 x 17/9——since no simplification can be done, just multiply straight.

      = 578/63

      ^_^

      4 6/7 = 34/7 & 1 8/9 = 17/9.

      34/7 x 17/9 = 578/63 = 9.17…

To convert from a mixed number to a fraction, multiple the denominator by the whole number part and add this to the numerator, e.g. 7×4+6=34.

To multiply two fractions, just put the product of their numerators over the product of their denominators.

Do u know how to multiply normal fractions?
just make the mixed number in to a fraction with a larger numerator.
But Make sure to keep the denominator
      4 6/7 ->34/7 1 8/9-> 17/9 <—- 1*9+8=17
      4*7= 28 + 6 = 34/7 * 17/9 =answer
I’m not telling you the answer though just the way to do it :P

The trick is to put the whole numbers into the fractions. You do this by multiplying the whole number (let’s say, 4) by the denominator (7), and adding it to the numerator (6). The new number you calculated becomes the new numerator.
      4 6/7
      4 x 7 + 6 = 34/7

      1 8/9
      1 x 9 +8 = 17/9

Now you multiply them. You multiply the numerators to make the new numerator, and the denominator to make up the new denominator.

      34/7 x 17/9 = 578/63

Check these answers in case I made a mistake!

there should be no whole number.
change the 4 into a fraction
4/1 is = to 4. find the LCM (least common multiples) of the 6/7 and 4/1 denominator
      6/7 x 1/1 = 6/7
      4/1 x 7 = 28/7 + them = 34/7. no whole # do the same with with the other fraction
(both fraction don’t need to have the same denominator)
you could cross cancel to make it easy.
      1/1 x 9 = 9/9 + 8/9 = 17/9

try to simplify both number crossway. find a GCF (greatest common factor) since there’s no GCF. you’ll have to multply them —>
      34 17 34 x 17 = ? 7x 9 =?

wow that is a hard problem once you get to a certain step.
      1st u change 4 6/7 and 1 8/9 to improper fractions. That would mean 4 6/7 changes to 34/7 and 1 8/9 changes to 17/9. then u multiply…
thats where it gets hard… when u get ur answer…simplify. i did the problem on a calculater and got 9.1746032 so i think u may have the wrong problem or something.. sorry hope i helped a little.. :)
