Where I live a starting salary is about 35,000 – 40,000.

Depends on the state and the school. I would guess that if you just have a BA, then you could expect about 30K-40K a year. Since school teachers are paid by tax money, any public school teacher’s salary is public record. So you should be able to check government websites for a posting of salaries.
