I’m going to be graduating this spring and will hopefully get a job teaching middle school science this summer.
I agree with an above poster.
It really depends on the teacher. With middle school kids – you know what you are getting. I prefer this level. They are goofy and they are extreme in their needs but they have huge goals and dreams.
You know those animals they bring into hospitals? they have to have the right demeanor. They will be poked, prodded and they *cannot* react negatively. Thats us middle school teachers.
today I had to break up a kissing couple as well as tell a boy to put his hotwheels cars away.

good luck! Honestly, it depends on the time. If it is early in the morning, they arent that bad but if it’s the last class of the day, OH BOY!

It depends on what classes you have. Like what kids you have in their. I have friends that are subs and they have some problems with middle school kids and they get aggravated easily. They said that they would rather teach high school kids. I dont know if this woudl help or not though.

Naw – they are a hoot.
You just have to be the right kind of teacher. You can’t be uptight nor can you be too loose. You have to have a very casual fun vibe, yet make it clear that you don’t play.
And truthfully, male teachers (which I assume you are from your Avatar) usually find an easier time. For some reason the kids seem to connect better.
Subbing MS does stink, but having your own classroom is a lot different.
Best advice from a mentor: Don’t have buttons. They can’t push them if you don’t have them.

i’ve taught middle school science. be on your toes during labs!!! they will destroy or otherwise abuse all science equipment. rulers become swords. wires get connected to things they shouldn’t be connected to — like electrical outlets. chemicals become foods.

Yes. I have taught all grade levels. They are more rude and speak more often and listen less.

Have you interacted with this age group at all?
For me, yes. But I prefer and do better teaching younger students. There are many who prefer teaching older students and some love middle schoolers. It all depends on your preference and talent.

Middle school students are experiencing a difficult stage in life, and therefore offer challenges to any teacher. One moment they act like young adults, and the next they act like kindergarten students. I believe that much depends on the location and makeup of the school district. Their age allows you to begin teaching fairly advanced topics in a creative, enjoyable, and even goofy ways.

in a word…yes
BUT they can also be alot of fun somedays as they are at an age where you can joke with them and they understand the humor better and can dish it out too
Be careful though- don’t be too soft and "fun" too early on or they will run over you. Be "uncool", "uptight", and "no fun" at first (just some of the words my students used about me at first but now see that I’m not really that way at all but at least they know when I mean business and when we have time for a little more fun).

Teachers are born with the talent to teach, at any level, or they should do something else

You couldn’t pay me enough. Really, you couldn’t.
However, one of my best friends is teaches MS Math & Science and she is fabulous at it and loves it. God bless her – but she says the little ones make HER crazy!
This is why is stick with my "medium" kids (grades 4 & 5)!!!
LOL
