  • Middle school students are not allowed to say a word during lunch. What do you think about this?

Posted by admin on February 13th, 2010 and filed under middle school students | 13 Comments »

These kids range from ages 10-13 and are being told by school teachers that they are not to speak at all during lunch. If they do then they will face the punishment of saturday school. I feel this is wrong and do not like it all. Where do we draw the line between freedom of speech and what they are doing? I understand the order and discipline factor but this is going too far in my opinion. This is in the Dallas ISD.

That is RIDICULOUS, I’ve never heard of another school district having silent lunches. Lunch and recess are supposed to times for kids to socialize and have fun, and they shouldn’t have to sit there in silence.

It IS way too far. In my middle school, there wasn’t recess, so our only free time was lunch. If that is the same situation, then those kids are being tortured! Why don’t you suggest sitting boy/girl at least! Then you could talk and make some friends that you normally wouldn’t have made.

I agree with you… Thats very stupid because students arent allowed to talk in class and in middle school you don’t get recess anymore. At least middle schoolers should be able to at least talk during lunch. People are always saying, have fun at school… Go make some new friends. How are you suppost to do that!?!?!?

Have any of the parents talked to the school principal? I have to admit, it does sound over the top, no matter what the reason. If I were one of the parents, I’d be questioning this.

No that is so wrong they have a freedom of speech and teachers can’t do that. That’s pretty much where kids can talk to there friends how they want like say what’s up or talking about what your going to do over the holidays. Talk to the other parents and go to the Principle and if that dosn’t work write a I forgot what it is called but you write why it is wrong to do that and freedom of speech stuff and why kids should be able to talk and then you and the parents sign it and all of the kids so tell your son to pass it around and hand it in to the Princible.

It shows a complete lack of understanding of child and adolescent development. I would go as far up the administrative chain of command as necessary and enlist parents in the effort.

I am a teacher and I discourage loud noise, but No Talking is too harsh. Lunch should be a time to unwind.

If it was a day or two, due to discipline, then I would be ok with it. If it was a permanent thing, I would have a problem with it. I would really have a problem if my child did talk and had to go to school on Saturday. I would be there to tell the teacher how stupid it was, and that my child would not be there on Saturday. Then I would take it up with the school board. I am sure I would get more parents on my side to complain too.

I can see if it was getting too loud, and they did it to quite the kids down for a day or two, but not for any more time than that.

I hear you loud and clear!!!! I think it is the worst thing they could possible do. These poor kids have to sit and be quiet in class. lunch should be a time for socialization…The difference in the Rio Grande Valley is that they inforce this in Elementary and then wonder why they have so many children in the Principals office for behavioral problems, these kids have NO free time to run, play and just be kids. Luckily our middle school is great they have 1 hr lunch and can go outside to play catch or visit with friends my son loves it, he says it gives him time to catch up on whats going on with his friends. If I were you I would write to TEA and to the District Superintendent and question it. maybe your voice will be the one to resolve the problem. If you are a parent, inform other parents, pass the word, maybe the more people complain the better.. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!
