What books have been absolute hits with male and female middle school students? I want to teach my 7th graders books that a majority of kids in class will REALLY get into. I thought I’d hit on such a book last year with "Stargirl," but half the kids hated it. Go figure. Also, please do not recommend any books that are have vulgar language or themes that are too adult. Thanks.
I am 22 years now but I remember reading The Outsiders when I was in seventh grade. It was a story that I feel both boys and girls can read and understand. I had a fantastic language arts teacher in 7th grade and she went above and beyond creating a unit to go along with the Outsiders.

Romeo and Juliet I read that in the 7th grade. It was interesting and with every part we read one that friday wed watch part of the movie. Or you could read the book and then wait until the end and watch the movie.

there is a great Australian Novel that the students here have studied called
Deadly Unna
I can’t recall the author but it may make it a more interesting read as it is based a particular sub-culture of Australians….
there will be many websites about it…

The entire Bluford series, available from townsendpress.com.
I used them last year and avid readers as well as reluctant readers enjoyed all ten books in the series. Each title has an Accelerated Reader test to accompany it also, if your school does AR.
